Students in the full-time kindergarten pilot class will attend school 5 days a week. Monday-Thursday, school hours are 8:30-1:30, and Friday, students will attend from 8:30-11:30. At that time, they may attend Friday Academy Classes, which are scheduled from 11:30-3:30 at an additional cost.
In our hybrid model, grades K-5 attend school 2 days a week from 8:30-1:30. There are 2 tracks they might attend – Track A meets Mondays and Wednesdays and Track B meets Tuesdays and Thursday. Four of these hours are dedicated to studying four core subjects – math, language arts, history and science. The other hour students have free time for fresh air, a snack and lunch. There is an optional kindergarten pick up time of 11:50 should a family desire a shorter day for their kindergarten student.
Our Middle School students (grades 6-8) meet from 8:30-2:30 on their 2 on-site days. In addition to the four core subjects, these students are required to take Latin and Logic classes.
Students participate in home study on the 3 days per week not at the school campus. Teachers provide the framework for the study of the four core subjects at home with room for personalization and time for studies in supplemental areas of interest. Certain additional academic subjects must be covered during home study (handwriting, spelling, grammar) but how this is done and which curriculum is used is chosen by the parent from our approved curriculum list or as approved by the curriculum team. Parents are also required to provide PE and fine arts opportunities, which has all kinds of variations depending upon each family’s interests.
While the time it takes to complete a home schooling day will vary, evening homework is not necessary for grammar school grades and is minimal for middle school grades. This leaves time for extracurricular activities, family time, play time and rest.
The following is a general guideline of average hours assigned by the school. How long home instruction takes is dependent upon many factors: the child, the parent, the number of children being taught, the schedule of the family, the number of younger children around the home, etc.
* Kindergarten: 2 hours average
* Primary (1/2): 2.5 hours average
* Intermediate (3-5): 3 hours average
* Middle School (6-8): 3.5 hours average
While these times are average amounts for the home instruction assigned by our teachers, a full home instruction day, which includes the other areas of required instruction (spelling, grammar, handwriting, PE and fine arts) will require more time. Below is a guideline on how many hours per home instruction day a child should be engaged in learning. Remember, this is an average and we don’t necessarily recommend stopping after this amount of time – if a child is capable and ready to learn more, there are wonderful ways to continue to engage and eager learner or a student who might need more time to master their studies.
* Kindergarten: 2.5 hours average
* Primary (1/2): 3 hours average
* Intermediate (3-5): 4-5 hours average
* Middle School (6-8): 5-6 hours average
On-site teachers hold office hours during the week for parent-teacher mentoring sessions. Conferences are required for the first and last trimesters and are scheduled on an as-needed basis by parent or on-site teacher request during the middle trimester. Sample work and narrative progress reports are handed in each trimester by both parent and on-site teacher for record of progress.
In addition, additional special interest workshops called Academy Classes are available on Fridays during various times throughout the year. Academy Classes have included art, P.E., sign language, Spanish, robotics, drums, guitar, musical drama, yoga, music, Colonial economics, cooking, chess, woodworking, language arts, and community service. Fees vary, depending on how many classes are taken.
