is an exciting and unique educational alternative serving students from Kindergarten through 8th grade whose goal is to partner with parents to create a wonderfully rich, rewarding, and meaningful education. Among many excellent public and private schools on the Central Coast, we offer a distinctive community that brings students, parents and teachers together in learning.
Our mission as a team is to provide ordinary children with an extraordinary education. We are committed to a shared goal of developing thoughtful and exemplary young men and women who possess analytical thinking skills, solid character, and a passion for learning, all built upon a strong foundation of knowledge.
Our goals are simple:
A Love of Learning: We want all students to receive a strong foundation of knowledge, a passion for learning and the tools necessary to think for themselves. With these gifts, we believe that children can accomplish just about anything.
Character Formation: We desire also that not only academics be developed, but that the whole child thrives. Character development is integrated throughout the program. In addition, we work to nurture excellent group skills, personal organization, comfort with public speaking, community service and a belief in one’s self.
Family Partnership & Support: We also encourage the development of strong families. We believe the parents are key to every child’s development and education, and we desire that this program bring families together. Parents are integrally involved when a student attends SLO Classical Academy, and parents repeatedly describe the program as rewarding and life-altering.
Wonder: In the big picture, we want families not to be amazed at what the school offers, but at what they see happening in their children.
In order to accomplish our mission, several programs are offered:
• Hybrid model - This is the model we started with and have focused on the past four years. Students attend classes of no more than 12 students taught by credentialed teachers 2 days per week. These teachers provide a structure for learning, mentoring for teachers and professional instruction for students. The Socratic method of open discussion format is employed along with methods which engage all children regardless of learning style. In addition, the students take part in ongoing and stimulating classroom discussions with their classmates, offering ongoing opportunities for growth and learning in all areas of life.
In conjunction with this in-class experience, students are provided with home instruction. This allows education to be more personally tailored to each student, it allows families great flexibility in scheduling, it allows greater flexibility in educational choices, and it allows students to receive valuable input from and training by their parent/s. Each family will be matched with one of the teachers for ongoing guidance and coaching to insure that the in-home piece of the child’s education is successful and that the parents feel supported.
Summer Camp - new for Summer, 2009, we are proud to be offering summer camps for ages 3 1/2 through 9th grade! Our camps will provide both fun and learning in our signature style. Information will be available about these camps in mid-February.
San Luis Obispo Classical Academy opened in fall of 2005 with 27 students in four classes from kindergarten through 6th grade. We proudly added 7th and 8th grades for the 2006/2007 school year. Currently, we have 172 students enrolled in grades kindergarten through 8th grade.
